Sound Therapy For Healing

Sound therapy as a solution to stress reduction, mood imbalance, or those long-time aches and pains

‘Since the human body is over 70% water and since sound travels five times more efficiently through water than air, sound frequency stimulation directly onto the body is a highly efficient means for total body stimulation, especially at a cellular level’ M L Gaynor MD

Sound healing has always moved me on a deep level, being a huge lover of music and dance. Having previously suffered from severe anxiety at times, I know how powerful certain frequencies are in resetting our brain, balancing our nervous system, and releasing stagnant energy or blocks in our body - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Around four years ago, I came across Marconi Union and their track ‘Weightless’. It started me on a journey of discovery, diving deeper into Solfeggio Frequencies*, and tools for healing. I’d found so much solace in listening to certain sounds at night (432hz, 417hz, 174hz, 639hz), or on my commute to work when I felt my heart rate increase, that I wanted to incorporate this therapy into my life more often.

When sound is produced, it causes the surrounding molecules to bump into neighbouring molecules, and so on. There is a subsequent series of collisions that pass through the air (or water) as a sound wave. When we hear a sound, we are connecting with the vibrations in the air. The number of vibrations per second is known as frequency, measured in hertz - 1hz is 1 vibration per second. And don’t get me wrong, I’m no scientist, I’ve just personally benefited from sound therapy, and get excited about it all.

Having transitioned to the next phase in my love of sound in early 2020, becoming a certified Sound Therapist, I’m continually blown away by the array of benefits that working with Himalayan singing bowls brings, either in a Sound Bath or with Sound Therapy (Vibroacoustic) Massage.

Not only are the cells in our body positively affected by sound waves, but the vibrations help regulate the flow of energy in our system - cleansing the central (soul) channel. This said, as we understand everything is energy, sound is a very significant healing modality, especially in times like these.

A few years back, as new sound lovers were paving the way for sound healing as we know it today, there was a study supported by Klaus Tschira Foundation in Germany conducted over two years, and it proved that sound therapy hugely reduced the symptoms of chronic tinnitus.

Fabien Maman, long-time established sound therapy massage pioneer and sound practitioner, also did some incredible research to show the impact of vibrations and resonance on cancer cells, and other unhealthy cells, ‘unable to maintain their structure as sound waves attack cytoplasmic and nuclear membranes’ (M L.Gaynor M.D.) - read the report here.

In short, it’s been proven that cancer cells shutter with resonance therapy, and the Thrive II doc also highlights some key sound learnings too.

‘The singing bowls act as a medium in which our inner chaos and conflict can be configured into a harmonious sense of calm centeredness that resonates through every cell of our body and mind’ M L Gaynor MD

With this in mind, whether it’s for physical, mental, emotional or spiritual relief, this therapy is highly effective. And, the sound vibrations travel all the way down to our fascia (connective tissue) as well - suffice to say this is deep healing, especially when used more frequently.

Physically: the vibrations release muscle tension and knots, massage the organs (including bowls), unblock phlegm in the lungs, reduce heart rate.

Mentally: helps rewire the brain, balances the nervous system, decreases stress or anxiety, promotes focus by taking you to alpha state, which relieves stress, facilitates mental clarity, increases verbal clarity.

Energetically: the combination of vibration and sound releases emotional tension and blocks, purifies the subtle energy channels and rejuvenates DNA structure.

Spiritually: by opening our energy channel with sound and vibration, we can experience greater insight into our own consciousness and spiritual awakening.

‘The physical effect of sound also has a great influence upon the human body. The whole mechanism, the muscles, the blood circulation, the nerves are all moved by the power of vibration. As there is resonance for every sound, so the human body is a living resonator for sound.’ Inayat Khan

Singing bowls were one of the first instruments made by humans to support healing and meditation, and connecting with higher consciousness through them is very much an honour. These instruments are a bridge between the cosmic and physical realms, and I have a deep respect for this ancient practice. All of the sessions I run are led in safe and protected spaces, with clear intentions.

My own Himalayan singing bowls have all been handmade in Nepal (some antique), and found their way into my small hands through beautiful avenues. This is Eastern culture, rooted in values I find incredibly inspiring and intrinsically connected to higher consciousness - and this is where left brain logic leaves the building, cue divine wisdom.

Sound therapy is an incredible tool to encourage healing, humanity, and seismic shifts in the body. In all of the sessions I’ve run, each experience has been unique to that person and what their body needs to release. Each client has feedback wholesome personal stories of catharsis, re-alignment, release, resetting, and clearing out the old.

This is medicine, and the kind we need more of - preventative holistic health care here for the benefit of the people. This is the future, yet strongly connected to ancient tradition and wisdom, and I’m looking forward to spreading awareness of this therapy with more and more people as time goes on.

‘Sound can play a role in virtually any medical disorder, since it redresses imbalances in every physiological function’ M L Gaynor MD

*Solfeggio Frequencies and how they can support you:

  • 174hz - the deepest frequency, supports the physical body. It’s a natural anesthetic, can relieve physical pain, induce feelings of security and comfort.

  • 285hz - heals skin (burns, cuts) and muscle tissue. Influences our energy field.

  • 396hz - emotional release (feelings of guilt, fear) and you can spend less time grieving when tuned into this frequency.

  • 417hz - focus on change and renewal. Helps cleanse the debris of negative memories and trauma from the mind.

  • 528hz -universal love frequency. Powerful DNA repair and peace of mind.

  • 639hz - harmonises relationships and supports connection.

  • 741hz - enhances problem solving and self expression. Removes toxins and EMF from our cells (for people concerned about increased radiation from various sources right now).

  • 852hz - connects us to source energy and greater intuition.
